Rettinger caps her 4-H years on high note

 Article by Antigo Daily journal

July 31st, 2010

Amanda Rettinger thanked her parents and “biggest competitor,” sister Elizabeth, and then sold her grand champion market steer in under a couple minutes.

The sale of the champion animal, which topped the scale at 1,365 pounds, was the highlight of a rousing auction which moved briskly through 46 sheep, steers and swine raised by 4-H and FFA exhibitors as the highlight of Friday’s action at the Langlade County Youth Fair.

Rettinger, no stranger to championship honors, is concluding her final year of 4-H involvement and shed a few quiet tears before auctioneer Duke Packard banged the gavel on her animal.

In addition to her parents, she thanked all the buyers for their support over the years as well as her sister, whom she called my “greatest competitor in the show ring.”

Her steer, impeccably groomed and adorned in bright garlands, entered the ring to wide applause, and left as the property of Richard and Marianne Deede of Richmadee Farms for $3.40 a pound, a total of $4,641.

Spirited underbidder was Parsons of Antigo.

The 2009 champion was sold by Madeline Matuszewski for $2.75 a pound.

The reserve champion steer, exhibited by Nicole Solin, also garnered brisk bidding. Parsons of Antigo, with Jordan Sharon holding the paddle, outbid Superior Grinding with a final offer of $3 a pound.

The animal weighed 1,210 pounds, so Sharon signed a ticket for $3,630.

Last year’s reserve champion, also exhibited by Solin, brought $2.25 a pound.

The show opened with Isabelle Matuszewski selling her grand champion swine, a 264-pound animal, to Peroutka’s Meat Processing for $5.25 a pound, a total of $1,386.

Underbidder was Butch’s SuperValu.

The 2009 grand champion sold for $4.50 a pound. It was exhibited by Michael Fillion.

Butch’s, represented by Tammy Gilbert was more successful for the reserve champion, winning the bidding at $3.75 for Trent Pavek’s 285-pound hog. Final tally was $1,068.

The 2009 reserve champion sparked a bidding war, won by Pete Pennington of World of Wood for Amanda Rettinger’s hog. Final bid then was $9 a pound, likely a modern fair record.

Pond Hill Processing bought Abby Heistad’s grand champion sheep, at 135 pounds, for $5 a pound, a total of $675.

Pond Hill owners Kurt and Peggy Klinner announced they were sending the animal back through the ring at the close of the evening, with proceeds to benefit Mark Chrudimsky, a local young man battling brain cancer.

The 2009 grand champion, exhibited by Josiah Schulz, brought $5 a pound from Copps Food Center.

Reserve champion sheep, exhibited by Amy Heistad, Abby’s little sister, sold for $4.95 a pound to Debra Korbisch. She signed the final ticket for $608.85 for the 123 pound lamb.

Forty-six animals went through the ring.
